Praxis ParaPro vs. Regular ParaPro: Understanding the Terminology

Many test-takers are confused about whether "Praxis ParaPro" and "ParaPro Assessment" are different tests. Here's the truth:

They Are the SAME Test!

The Praxis ParaPro Assessment and the ParaPro Assessment are the same test. The different names simply reflect branding and administrative preferences:

  • "Praxis ParaPro" - Used when states emphasize it's part of the Praxis Series
  • "ParaPro Assessment" - The generic name for the same test
  • Test Code 1755 - The ETS test code for both names
  • Whether a state accepts a score is that state's rule, whatever it calls the test

What the Exam Covered, and What Replaced It

The Praxis ParaPro Assessment tested reading, mathematics, and writing, and asked how to apply those skills in a classroom: one-third of its questions focused on applying skills in the classroom, according to ETS. It reported one scaled score. ParaPathways (5757) replaced it with two separately timed and separately scored subtests:

Reading & Writing (5758)

51 questions in 85 minutes. See the Reading & Writing guide.

Mathematics (5759)

36 questions in 60 minutes. See the Mathematics guide.

Understanding Praxis ParaPro Scoring

The Praxis ParaPro uses a scaled scoring system that can be confusing. Here's what you need to know:

Scoring Breakdown

Raw Score

  • β€’ Number of questions answered correctly
  • β€’ No penalty for wrong answers
  • β€’ Maximum raw score: 90
  • β€’ Answer every question!

Scaled Score

  • β€’ Range: 420–480
  • β€’ Your official score
  • β€’ Accounts for test difficulty
  • β€’ Used for pass/fail decisions

Passing Score Thresholds by State:

Each state sets its own passing score on the 420–480 scale. Check your state's current requirement at ets.org/parapro or your state DOE website before testing β€” thresholds can change.

Expert Study Strategies for Praxis ParaPro

Sample Study Plan

How long to study depends on where you start. Take a timed practice test first and plan your time around the subtest you score lower on. The three phases below are a template: stretch or shorten each one to fit.

Phase 1: Assessment & Foundation

  • Take a diagnostic practice test
  • Identify your weakest areas
  • Review basic math concepts (ParaPathways provides an on-screen calculator)
  • Refresh grammar and punctuation rules

Phase 2: Content Deep Dive

  • Focus on your weakest subject area
  • Complete 20-30 practice questions daily
  • Review application-based scenarios
  • Practice mental math strategies

Phase 3: Practice & Polish

  • Take 2-3 full-length practice tests
  • Time yourself strictly, using the real time limit for each subtest
  • Review all incorrect answers thoroughly
  • Focus on test-taking strategies

Critical Test-Taking Tips

  • Mental math: A four-function calculator is provided, but it does not do the reasoning for you, so daily fluency practice still pays off.
  • Time Management: Don't let any one question use the time of several
  • Process of Elimination: Cross out obviously wrong answers first
  • Answer Everything: No penalty for guessing - never leave blanks
  • Application Questions: Think like a paraprofessional in a classroom
  • Reading Carefully: Many errors come from misreading questions

What Your State Calls It

States and districts use different names for the ParaPro, and each state sets its own requirement and its own passing score. Look up your state's current rule on our state-by-state pages and confirm it with your state department of education.

Common Praxis ParaPro Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake #1: Focusing Only on Content Knowledge

Remember, one-third of the ParaPro's questions asked how you'd APPLY knowledge in a classroom. Study teaching strategies too.

Mistake #2: Poor Time Management

Each ParaPathways subtest runs on its own clock (85 minutes for 51 questions, 60 minutes for 36), so you can't afford to get stuck. Practice with timed tests.

Mistake #3: Not Knowing Your State's Score

Study intensity should match your state's requirement. Passing scores are set by each state, and some states leave them to each district, so look up yours before you plan your study time.

Mistake #4: Cramming Last Minute

This is a skills-based test. Spread your practice out instead of leaving it for the last night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the Praxis ParaPro harder than the regular ParaPro?

A: They are the exact same test! The difficulty is identical regardless of what your state calls it. Don't let the different names confuse you.

Q: Can I use ParaPro study materials for the Praxis ParaPro?

A: Yes. Since it's the same test, ParaPro study materials and practice tests apply to the Praxis ParaPro (1755). To prepare for ParaPathways, which replaced it, use materials written for that test.

Q: How soon can I retake the Praxis ParaPro if I don't pass?

A: ParaPro can no longer be taken. For ParaPathways, ETS lets you retake once right away; after that you wait 21 days after your most recent attempt. Use that time to focus on the weak areas in your score report.

Q: Will my Praxis ParaPro score count if I move states?

A: ETS keeps scores on record for 10 years and can send them for you. Whether your new state accepts a ParaPro score, and which score it requires, is that state's decision, so ask its department of education.
